First of all, we can never find a Master. It is like a sleeping person(us) trying to find an awake (Master) person in our sleep and telling him to wake us up. The Master will always find us whenever we are "ready".
Having said that, there are some pointers for us ("to be ready"):
A student is independent and is interested simply in knowledge.- Be a seeker, not a customer . A seeker is obliged for what he receives, whereas a customer simply pays for what he gets.
- Look for a Master, and not for a teacher. A master shares his experiences, whereas a teacher simply shares his knowledge.
- Drop shopping mentality. A western mind has shopping mentality, characterized by visiting different masters and trying to learn something from here and something from there. A master is intelligent enough to identify such persons and does not like to share any mystery with them.
- Be a disciple, not a student or a follower :
A follower is dependent and is interested in salvation.
A disciple is interdependent and is interested in real knowing.
Knowledge is information and Knowing is Wisdom.
- We can read any number of books, but real knowing will come through a Master, and not through books. Therefore, look for a Living Master.
- We should pray directly to God, with deep longing in our hearts, that he may send us a worthy guide.
- Master can be of any age, gender, caste, creed, religion, language, country, dress, physical appearance, economic status or living style.
- Be with the Master for a reasonable period (minimum 3-6 months). If you feel peace, growing, love and warmth, if your heart pulsates with him, if you find yourself at the same wave length, then surrender to Him. However, if you do not feel yourself in tune with Him, then better to thank Him and go away.
- If you have been connected with any Master, who has left his body, they can help through a Living Master.
