The Mind-Part 1

This is the First Part of The Mind...

We all think we know mind. But honestly have we anytime tried to enquire about our mind. Today let us try to investigate it.

Kindly first read my previous blog What is our Real Search?

There was no-mind (thoughtlessness) when we were in the womb. When we came out of the womb there was no-mind (thoughtlessness). Till 4 years Mind was used to experience outer world via our sensory organs. Memory started developing and storing basic data. After 4 years our personality (masking) started developing which can be also called as conditioning or conscience. Conscience means rules, behavior, attitude etc., official/unofficial given by parents, teachers and society in all to whomsoever we get connected or interact. They all started getting stored in the memory.  Then of course, our language, reading, schooling, learning, work, retirement (till you are dead) , gets stored in our memory.

In short just go through your life right from the beginning and just see how the memory is getting updated through thoughts.

Do not go over what is said in the books about mind. Also do not focus much on my grammar of my blog. Just start peeping in your own life. Keep your mind open.

Slowly our memory, one of the mind faculty  became a repository of words and languages.  Instead of feeling directly, we started thinking through our mind about that feeling. Example, As a child when we had ice-cream we will purely and naturally  enjoy it, but as we grew up we will start talking about it, like “Oh I like strawberry flavor” etc. This filter slowly started becoming so important that even the simplest feeling we will think. Even today people don’t actually feel, they think that they feel (seriously neurotic).

Give any adult a rose and ask “How is the rose”. They will say “It is beautiful”. They have a knowledge of the rose from their memories. Instead of feeling it Now and Here , they are describing it. The beauty is lost. I am not saying it is wrong, what I am saying is the purest feeling is lost in the whole process. A person with child’s innocence will not utter a single word. It will feel that rose as it is(Now and Here).

Mind slowly acquired following functions and became our master:
  • Main Function:
  • Thoughts
    • Neutral Thoughts
    • Positive Thoughts
    • Negative Thoughts

    • Memories.
      • Past Conditioning Experiences i.e.  Parents, Relatives etc.
      • Experiences via our 5 sensory organs and all the given below in Subsidiary Functions.
      • Our Reading, Learning  and Education

  • Subsidiary Functions:
    • Processing.
    • Evaluation.
    • Calculation.
    • Masking (Personality).
    • Imagination.
    • Thinking.
    • Perception (Recognition).
    • Expectation.
    • Anticipation.
In short our mind main function is of thought and memory. It is like a dictionary or repository (whatever you can call). This is filled up with only those contents which we have experienced via our 5 senses. In short it is like storing data in our personal hard disk / laptop etc. which is limited.

Now a few disconnected but important statements about mind:

Desire is the memory of pleasure and fear is the memory of pain. Moments of pleasure are merely gaps in the stream of pain. Between the banks of pain and pleasures the river of life (unconditional acceptance) flows. It is only when the mind refuses to flow with life, and gets stuck at the banks, that it becomes a problem. We think desires that lead to sorrow are wrong and those which lead to happiness are right
